The Truth about the Single Incision Lap-Band procedure
The Single Incision Lap-Band procedure is a surgery not every “considered” for any kind of obese patient. The selection criteria has to be more strict due that not everyone is a candidate to submit to this procedure.
The surgical & anesthetic risks are much higher due that the surgical risk is three times bigger as well as the medical complications.
It is really not only ONE incision that is done but TWO, one is performed in the navel of 20 mm and the other one of 5 mm in the sub-xifoideal level (under rib cage area) to insert the liver retractor.
Other considerations:
Longer surgical time, 1 – 2.5 hrs compared to 15-20 min.
Higher anesthetic risk
Higher Vascular risk due to bad visibility for the surgeon at time of procedure.
Higher risk of intestinal perforation.
Increment in the posibility of a stroke and as a consequence of major morbi-mortality
Procedure indicated in patients with lower B.M.I. of 29
Recommended in women who have had given birth two or three times and being obesity the result
Contra-indicated in patients that have had tummy tucks recently
